🌟 Editor's Note

Good morning {{first_name | resident}},

Welcome to the Lab #14, the 1st of December and last month of 2025. It truly creeps up on you.

This week, news is light but events are a plenty heading into the Christmas season. I’ve brought back Pet of the Week, highlighting a pet you can adopt locally.

Have a great day,

Norman.

🏖 Big Summer Read

Get the kids reading this summer (and maybe win a few prizes along the way)

Cumberland Libraries are kicking off BIG Summer Reads, a free reading challenge designed to keep kids and teens (0–18 years) engaged over the school holidays.

Whether they’re flipping through a picture book, listening to an audiobook, or being read to by a parent—it all counts.

The goal is simple: keep reading, keep learning, and make it fun.

How it works

  • Sign-ups open 1 December – register online and drop by any Cumberland library to grab your starter pack.

  • From today to 31 January 2026, log every book or audiobook read.

  • Complete reading challenges for the chance to win weekly prizes.

  • Borrowing books also gives entries into a national prize draw.

Keeping kids reading during the break helps avoid the dreaded summer slump—when reading levels dip after weeks away from routine.

If you’ve got kids, nieces, nephews, or even a younger sibling who could use a screen break, this is worth getting behind. It’s easy, fun, and gives them something meaningful to do over the holidays.

Register online and visit any library within Cumberland.

🧑‍🌾 Botanica Community Gardern Update

Last week we brought the Botanica Community Garden into spotlight to spread the word about a wonderful community project that, like many plants took many years to reach this point.

In the last week the garden has had many new seeds planted, erected a bamboo trellis and has received donations from the community.

To join the fun, become a member and visit the garden during the following open times:

Wednesday 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Saturday 8:00 am - 12:00 pm
Sunday 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Remember to also join the Botanica Garden Facebook group for updates.

🐱 Pet of the Week 🐶
RSPCA Sydney Shelter (Yagoona)

Aslan via RSPCA Sydney Shelter (Yagoona)

Aslan is a Domestic Short Hair x Bengal with plenty of playful energy and a big heart.

He takes time to settle in, but once he feels safe, he becomes affectionate and deeply loyal.

He’s best suited to a calm, quiet home (no children under 12) with someone who understands active breeds and is patient while he builds trust.

He loves “hunting” through play, especially with interactive toys and puzzles, and would thrive with a secure outdoor catio to safely explore.

Aslan can be vocal when unsure, simply communicating as he adjusts. With time and kindness, this cat will bring warmth, character and love to his new home.

Visit Aslan and his other furry friends, make an online enquiry.
